Environmental Justice Programme
This programme focuses on empowering communities to conserve marine biodiversity. Although devolution in Kenya aimed to promote social and economic development and recognize community rights, it has unfortunately led to issues such as corruption, misplaced priorities, and destruction of marine ecosystems. The degradation of mangroves, pollution of seas, and encroachment on protected areas highlight the urgent need for action.
Ongoing Project: Community Empowerment for Conservation of Marine Biodiversity
This project aims to enhance public participation in sustainable marine biodiversity management and policy formulation. By working together with county governments and communities, the project seeks to address issues of corruption, impunity, and environmental degradation. It promotes sustainable livelihoods and the responsible use of marine resources.
- Community sensitization forums on the conservation of marine biodiversity.
- Enhancing community understanding of the garbage value chain and linking recycling groups with government and private sector initiatives.
- Advocacy for policies to combat climate change and ensuring meaningful resource allocation for policy implementation.
- Reforestation and restoration of degraded marine ecosystems.
- Promoting alternative livelihoods to reduce pressure on marine ecosystems.
- Recruitment, training, and deployment of community mangrove forest guards to protect restored areas.
